NSW Health warning patients of former Dr William Tam to get tested for blood-borne viruses

Health authorities are urging people who may have visited a dental practice in Sydney’s inner west to get tested for blood-borne viruses.

Dr NSW Health is a retired practitioner who has practiced dentistry for more than 25 years. He says all of William Tam’s patients are warned that they may have been exposed to hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.

A recent inspection by the Dental Council of NSW at Dr Tam’s premises at Suite B, 2 Albert Road, Strathfield, revealed concerns about infection control practices.

NSW Health says the retention of patient records is also a concern.

Clinical Director of Public Health for Sydney Local Health District, Dr. Leena Gupta, Dr. He said it was believed Tam may have looked after thousands of people, but there were no records that could be used to contact them.

“As a precaution, we are asking all of Dr Tam’s previous patients to get tested.

Blood-borne viruses,” Dr. Gupta said.

“Poor infection control practices in Dr Tam’s practice mean that all former patients may be at low risk of blood-borne virus infection, which can have serious and long-term health effects.

“Patients with HIV, hepatitis B or hepatitis C may not show any symptoms for decades, so it is important that people at risk of these infections are tested so they can access appropriate treatment. Effective treatments are available for all three conditions.”

Former patients of Dr Tam, who is no longer a registered dentist, are advised to consult the NSW Health website, speak to their GP or contact Healthdirect on 1800 022 222.

Anyone who is disturbed by this news and needs mental health support can call the Mental Health Line on 1800 011 511.
