NSW Premier Chris Minns teases extra public holiday this Anzac Day

NSW residents may have an extra public holiday as Anzac Day falls on a weekend this year, according to the state’s premier.

NSW Premier Chris Minns told Triple M on Thursday that the state government was considering introducing an additional weekday bank holiday as Anzac Day falls on a weekend in 2026 and 2027.

When asked if there would be a public holiday on Anzac Day this year, Mr Minns said there is usually no holiday when the day falls on a weekend.

However, he noted that Western Australia and the ACT have recently changed this, meaning if the day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, you get the following Monday off.

“I’m not committing to that today because I think that’s a decision we need to make, especially with RSL,” Mr Minns said.

“And we have a lot of veterans… I think most people have great respect for Anzac Day, they respect it.

“They realize that this is actually our national day, a time when we respect the people who died for the country.”

Mr Minns said he needed to talk to RSL about plans for this year and next.

“We are underserved when it comes to public holidays, other states have a lot more,” he said.

“I can tell you, we’re going to talk about it this year.”
