The young woman killed in a bungee jumping tragedy was still alive after hitting the ground, according to a nurse who frantically tried to save her.

Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, 21, fell to her death Saturday after being thrown from the abandoned 130-meter Skeleton Bridge in Sao Paulo without a safety rope. Nurse Rayza Dias, who rushed to her aid, told Brazilian television that the woman did not die immediately.

Speaking to Domingo Espetacular on Sunday, Dias stated how difficult it was to reach Rodrigues de Freitas after the fall and said, “I scraped my whole hand because there is a steep slope below and there is only one rope for us to go down.” “There was mud everywhere. I kept going down, and we walked to the end.”

Dias explained that the victim was breathing heavily and had a weak pulse as he worked to provide immediate life-saving treatment.

“I even talked to him. I have a habit of joking and saying, ‘No one dies on my shift.’ And I told him, ‘Dude, no one dies on my shift.’ Even though I’m not there on my shift,” he said, becoming visibly emotional.

“Duda” is a commonly used affectionate term for a Portuguese woman named Eduarda or a man named Eduardo or Duarte.

Based on local reports and a video that later spread widely online, Rodrigues de Freitas had requested an “airplane-style” launch, with two instructors hoisting him onto their shoulders as he extended his arms.

It was claimed that the operators did not tie a rope to the seat belt. The defendants are now charged with murder with ultimate intent, which applies in cases where the defendant did not intend to kill someone but acted with extreme recklessness resulting in death.

Brazilian military police told local media that the two men fled the scene in Limeira after realizing their fatal mistake. A helicopter quickly located them in a nearby wooded area, and the Sao Paulo Secretariat of Public Security confirmed that the six men had been brought in for questioning.

The defendant emphasized that there had been a “blackout” during the preparation and that they “didn’t remember” where or when they had managed to tie the rope or who was responsible for securing the rope.

The names of the three detained men were stated locally as Maicon Fernandes Cintra (42), Luis Felipe Feliciano Egoroff (32) and Vitor de Freitas Gonçalves (27). This isn’t the first fatal incident to occur on Skeleton Bridge.

In 2024, a female cyclist crossing the road with her friends lost control and fell off a cliff to her death.

Following this tragedy, the federal government ordered the municipality of Limeria to restrict access and install warning signs. The city complied, but the blocked entrance was quickly overcome.

Following the death of Rodrigues de Freitas, Limeira City Hall emphasized that the federal government had the responsibility to monitor the bridge, adding that it had previously warned federal authorities about the dangers posed by the abandoned structure.

The city also announced its intention to take legal action against the Brazilian government, which has failed to monitor and regulate access to the abandoned railway.

“In addition to the circumstances that led to the death of the young woman, it is necessary to determine who is responsible for the failure to control access to a federal territory that carries risks that have been known for years and where the necessary security measures are still not taken,” Limeira Mayor Murilo Felix said. he said.

“We have been calling for action for months to ensure that the Federal Government takes responsibility. Unfortunately, failure to act has resulted in a new tragedy in Limeira.”

Rodrigues de Freitas was buried in São Paulo on Sunday, and his mother took to social media just hours after the funeral. “That damn rope took you from me forever,” the heartbroken mother said.

“My dear daughter, you are gone, only pain and longing remain. I will love you forever.”
