Now Nvidia believes it has a practical solution to this and that the underlying technology is simpler than it seems.
Nvidia’s Solution: Closed Loop Liquid Cooling
Nvidia announced Monday that its newest AI servers will run entirely on liquid cooling, eliminating air-cooling fans that traditionally increase water demand in large data center facilities.
Instead of drawing water from external sources, heat is dissipated using a liquid coolant consisting of water and propylene glycol circulating in a closed loop. Since the system constantly circulates the same coolant, there is no need to draw new water.
“We eliminated a huge amount of power use and almost all water use,” said Ali Heydari, Nvidia’s director of data center cooling and infrastructure.
The system is also built to withstand higher operating temperatures than previous designs and remains functional down to 45 degrees Celsius or 113 degrees Fahrenheit.
Why Higher Cooling Temperature Is More Important Than It Looks
According to researchers who study data center efficiency, the 45-degree threshold is more important than it initially appears.
