NYC Mayor Adams signs executive orders against antisemitism and BDS

Outgoing New York City Mayor Eric Adams signed two executive orders on Wednesday aimed at combating anti-Semitism and preventing city funds from supporting the anti-Israel Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement.

New York Post reported He said Adams has banned city business or retirement investment decisions that discriminate against Israel, which could be seen as a challenge to Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, who supports the BDS movement.

Speaking at a conference in New Orleans sponsored by the North American Mayors Summit Against Antisemitism, Adams said his administration “recognizes the benefit of maintaining a strong relationship between New York City and the state of Israel,” according to The Post.

The second order issued by the mayor would call for stricter enforcement from the New York City Police Department to help protect synagogues and other worshipers from harassment.

The new orders increase the ideological conflict between Adams and Mamdani, who may decide whether to rescind the orders after taking office on Jan. 1.

Mamdani’s team did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

In an interview with MSNBC on November 4, Mamdani defended his support for the (BDS) movement, saying it was a way to pressure Israel to comply with international law.

“So I said, I support BDS because it’s a movement that’s looking for that kind of harmony. We haven’t seen that,” he said.

“Morning Joe” co-host Willie Geist asked Mamdani: “As mayor, could your administration’s policy be BDS?”

“I said that I will support and support non-violent movements to ensure compliance with international law,” Mamdani said. he said. “So where is this mayor? [Eric Adams] “If he violated and attempted to violate that type of law, I would bring us back into compliance.”

Mamdani added during the interview that he would be the mayor of all Jewish New Yorkers.

New York City recorded more than $32 billion in purchase agreements with outside vendors in fiscal 2024 and maintains five retirement systems that support more than 750,000 employees, retirees and beneficiaries, according to The Post. They also invest approximately $300 billion in securities on the global market, including Israeli assets of over $300 million.

The two executive orders come a week after protesters chanted “globalize the intifada” and “death to the IDF” outside a synagogue in New York City, according to The Post.

Adams said his administration “is ensuring that our city government does not engage in this type of behavior and is taking measures that protect New Yorkers’ tax revenues and their right to practice their religion without harassment.”

Following Wednesday’s conference, the mayor posted that X “discussed and shared how we are governing to better protect ALL communities despite the rising tide of hate, fear, and misinformation in our cities.”

“We cannot stand by and watch the spread of anti-Semitism or any other form of hatred,” Adams said.

“We must loudly defend the Jewish people,” he added.

Adams had previously warned Jewish New Yorkers about their safety after Mamdani won the election, saying “everything is not okay” during a fireside chat at a Movement Against Antisemitism event in Tel Aviv last month.
