Former President Barack Obama questioned claims about government secrets about aliens, arguing that the federal government cannot continue such a massive cover-up.
Speaking on “The Late Show” with host Stephen Colbert, Obama called ongoing UFO speculation “conspiracy theories.”
“One of the things you learn as president is that the government is terrible at keeping secrets,” Obama said.
He stated that he believed that if the government had evidence of alien life forms, the information would have been leaked long ago. “I promise you, one of the guys guarding the facility would take a selfie with one of the aliens and send it to his girlfriend,” he said.

This exchange follows a viral moment in February 2026, when the former president was forced to walk back cryptic comments made on Brian Tyler Cohen’s podcast. Obama’s statement at the time, “These are real, but I haven’t seen them,” sparked speculation on the internet.
He later explained his words on Instagram: “Statistically, the universe is so vast that there is a high probability of life there. But the distances between solar systems are so great that our chances of being visited by aliens are low and I have seen no evidence during my presidency That extraterrestrials have contacted us. Really!”
Despite his skepticism about the cover-up, the former president did not rule out extraterrestrial life. He told Colbert he wished it were real and joked about serving as humanity’s representative.

“I think I would be a good ambassador for the planet at first contact,” Obama said. “I have some experience in government administration and diplomacy. I’m friendly. So I think I could do a pretty good job.”
