Officials weigh sweeping ban on common item to protect iconic US oasis — here’s what you need to know

Community leaders in California are considering the benefits of banning some single-use plastics to better protect the environment.
Like reported By Tahoe Daily Tribune The El Dorado County Board of Supervisors will vote on a resolution soon. proposed ban This will ban the sale of polystyrene, plastic food packaging and single-use water bottles. The measure received support from the League to Save Lake Tahoe, a nonprofit environmental organization that aims to protect the Lake Tahoe Basin, home to nearly 300 species of mammals, fish and birds.
Extruded polystyrene, more commonly known as Styrofoam, has long been the target of comprehensive nationwide bans due to its non-biodegradable nature. Since Styrofoam does not decompose naturally, it can often turn into microplastics that pollute the environment and waterways.
These microplastics can be ingested by wildlife and not only cause physical harm and even death, but also increase the risk of contaminants moving up the food chain. Chemicals used to make plastics can often find their way into soil and water, and the production process itself can contribute to air and gas pollution.
In addition to outright banning plastics, promoting sustainable alternatives can play an important role in reducing our dependence on fossil fuels. Bans also raise awareness of single-use plastic waste and can encourage a transition to a circular economy through increased use of recyclable or biodegradable materials.
While plastic bans may be better for the planet in the long run, they could potentially create higher costs for local businesses due to difficulties finding alternatives. This can lead to reduced profits, ultimately affecting local economies. Many business owners in El Dorado County have already expressed concerns about a potential ban.
“We once again ask the board not to commit to pursuing an ordinance due to limited information, lack of promised benefits, and impact on consumers and businesses.” wrote Timothy James is government relations director for the California Grocers Association.
