Olivia Wilde revealed that Jason Sudeikis’ stunning comment on her way home on her birthday night made clear what the former couple had a hard time admitting: their relationship was over.
The “Don’t Worry Darling” star offered a rare glimpse into the private struggles behind her split from Sudeikis, revealing the heartbreaking exchange that ultimately confirmed what the couple was reluctant to admit. Wilde said the separation ultimately informed his creative process and helped shape the relationship themes at the center of his new film, “The Invite.”
“It’s no surprise to me that I would make a film about relationships and the complexities of deciding whether or not a relationship is over because it’s not an overnight process,” he said.Call His Dad.” “Very difficult.”
Wilde recalled a conversation she had on March 10, 2020, after she and Sudeikis had “a really bumpy, bumpy ride” in their relationship.

“We were coming home from a birthday party my friends had thrown. I said, ‘Did you buy me a birthday present?’ I said. And he said, ‘What should I get you, Olivia? I don’t know you,'” Wilde explained. “And he wasn’t wrong. We didn’t know each other anymore.”
Wilde said this change forced them to confront how disconnected they were in their relationships.
“And that’s what makes me want to do it [‘The Invite’] because or one of the things, because in a relationship you can get to a point where you stop knowing each other through your curiosity about each other,” he explained. “And you find yourself in a place where you think, ‘I don’t even know you.’ And that was a point, that’s when we realized it was over and it was so hard. And that got us to a point where we were like, ‘Okay, this is over.’ We will put an end to this.’ And then, literally two days later, quarantine COVID happened.”

Olivia Wilde said that this change made them realize that they were both growing apart and inspired the themes later explored in her new film “The Invite”.
Wilde and Sudeikis met at a “Saturday Night Live” party in 2011 and got engaged in 2013. They never married, but they spent nearly a decade together and had two children, Otis and Daisy. Although the love may have ended, Wilde emphasized that their shared commitment to parenthood was never lost.
Wilde called Sudeikis a “very capable co-parent” and said, “The moment you share custody with someone, the way you think about parenting changes.” The actor said sharing parenting responsibilities allows both parents to be fully present with their children when they have time together.
“I feel like a superhero, not because of my skills, but because I switch between identities. Because my version of walking into a phone booth and putting on a suit is like going to work and being 100 percent ready to work 24/7. But everyone in my life knows that when I’m with my kids, it’s the exact opposite.”

“And sometimes that’s challenging. You have to find the balance. But I actually think that kind of sharing of responsibility can allow for really great parenting. Because we always do our best with our kids. They get the best from us.”
According to Wilde, the benefits of this approach extend beyond planning and logistics.
“I really want to tell people that even if you’re not with them 100 percent and you’re sharing them with their other parent, you can still be an incredible parent. That doesn’t mean you can’t be that good of a parent. You can even be a better parent.”
Despite finding stability as co-parents, Wilde said one post-separation incident was among the most difficult experiences she’s had: being served custody papers while presenting on stage at CinemaCon in 2022.

Wilde noted that CinemaCon is one of Hollywood’s most important industry meetings, bringing together studio executives, theater owners and press members. The risky presentation left her feeling particularly vulnerable when it happened in front of a crowd.
“Of all the things I’ve been through, one of the scariest things I’ve ever experienced was being given homework on stage. And now I have to say, the part where I could laugh, with enough space behind it, was obviously incredibly traumatic. There’s a lot of elements to it. But I can get over it because weirdly, as women, we’re taught to work through the craziest experiences, so I said, ‘Finish your speech.’ I got through that, went backstage, like I completely melted into a puddle.”

He later learned that footage of the incident had been posted online, even though phones were not allowed at the event. Reflecting on the controversy years later, Wilde said the “Ted Lasso” star told him that he was unaware that he would serve him publicly.
“Jason told me he didn’t know. I have to believe that in order to move on. And, you know, I think lawyers can be very upset and do terrible things, and I realize that.”
Although Wilde described the incident as “terrible in so many ways”, he said he believed it also strengthened his resilience.
“…it’s like I can’t believe this is happening to me here,” he recalled. “But still, you know, the crazy thing is, when you get through things like that, you feel like you can get through anything.”
