ChatGPT producer Openai is reported to be preparing to make a bold movement to produce a series of AI chips, which aim to reduce dependence on NVIDIA, which is currently dominating 80 percent of the AI chip market.
According to Reuters, Openai will cooperate with the semiconductor giant Broadcom in the development of registered AI chips focusing on AI models. The mass production of their chips is expected to be sent earlier next year, but at the beginning, they will be deployed in Openai’s own infrastructure instead of being sold to third parties.
To leave Nvidia from Openai?
Although Openai did not make any official announcement, Broadcom’s General Manager Hock Tan confirmed that the company cooperated with customers to create AI accelerators. Although he did not define specific partners, he announced that a customer has already given production orders. As reported by Reuters, in the last quarter, one of these expectations published production orders to Broadcom.
The Openai Chip Design team grew with 40 engineers under Richard Ho, who previously worked in Google’s AI Chip section, and worked with Broadcom to create a stronger processor than reports. They will produce chips using advanced 3-nanometer process technology. The technology giant plans to conclude the first special chip design this year and to start mass production in 2026.
