OpenAI launches its own AI web browser Atlas

OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered browser built around its popular chatbot, aiming to loosen Google Chrome’s grip on the market.
Shares of Alphabet, owner of the Chrome browser, fell 2.6 percent in afternoon trading in the United States.
The product is the latest entrant in a rapidly crowded field of AI browsers that also includes Perplexity’s Comet and Opera’s Neon, as companies use tools that can summarize pages, fill out forms and draft code to attract users.
Atlas allows users to open a ChatGPT sidebar in any window to summarize content, compare products, or analyze data from any site.
In agent mode in Atlas, ChatGPT interacts with sites for users, who can use it to perform end-to-end tasks such as researching and shopping for trips.
The browser is now available globally on Apple’s macOS.
It will be available on Windows, iOS and Android soon.
Establishing itself as a gateway to online searches could allow OpenAI, the world’s most valuable startup, to attract more internet traffic and capture revenue from digital advertising.
OpenAI said ChatGPT already has more than 800 million users, but most get it for free.
The San Francisco-based company is losing more money than it makes and is looking for ways to turn a profit.
