Day after Mahayuti victory in civic polls, Maharashtra Cabinet clears key infra and transport decisions

The Maharashtra Cabinet on Saturday, January 17, 2026, extended the extension of fare reduction for electric vehicles in Atal Setu by another year and approved a series of decisions on infrastructure and urban transport, a day after the BJP-led Mahayuti won a landslide victory in the civic polls.

The cabinet, headed by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, also approved the revised cost and State’s share for the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-2), which aims to improve suburban rail and urban mobility infrastructure.

The premium for the land allotted to Tirupati Devasthanam for the construction of the Padmavati Devi temple at Ulwe in Navi Mumbai has also been waived.

The Cabinet approved the restructuring of 1,901 positions in the Directorate of Economy and Statistics and approved the renaming of this department to the Commissariat of Economics and Statistics.

According to the official statement, revised staffing patterns for district planning committees, divisional commissioner offices and special development programs have also been approved.

To provide relief to passengers, the toll concession on Atal Bihari Vajpayee Shivdi-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu has been extended for another year.

Under the Prime Minister’s e-Drive scheme, the Council of Ministers approved a direct payment mechanism for the purchase of 1,000 electric buses for the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal.

According to the statement, payments will be made through direct debit orders from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporations to the respective companies.

To promote agricultural exports, the government has permitted the setting up of a multi-modal hub and terminal market for fruits and vegetables at Bapgaon in Thane district.

About 7.96 hectares of land will be provided to the State Agricultural Marketing Corporation for facilities including steam heat treatment, irradiation, packaging and cold storage.

The cabinet also gave the green light to the Bembla river project in Yavatmal district, which will bring 52,423 hectares of land under irrigation in five talukas for ₹ 4,775 crore. The rehabilitation problem of Dhamak village in Amravati district has also been resolved.

In a major housing initiative, the cabinet has approved the Mumbai Police Housing District project, under which 45,000 houses will be built for police officers and personnel in Mumbai city and its suburbs.

Other endorsements include the establishment of the Maharashtra Holistic International Mobility and Advancement Agency (MAHIMA) to help talented youth access overseas job opportunities through coordinated training and placement support.

A parcel of land in Panvel (West) will be allotted to Annasaheb Patil Backward Class Development Corporation for the construction of its headquarters and a multi-purpose building, the statement said.
