NATO jets scrambled as Russia launches missile strikes on Kiev | World | News

After Russia launched a “massive” combined drone and ballistic missile attack on Kiev, NATO warplanes took off and air defenses were activated across the region in response.

It was reported that three unmanned aerial vehicles and two ballistic missiles were fired at the capital of Ukraine. Kiev Mayor Klitschko reported that there were explosions in the city, but these have not yet been confirmed by independent organizations. No casualties have been reported so far.

Poland activates defense

In a significant escalation, the Polish Armed Forces Operational Command announced that it had scrambled jets and upgraded air defense systems to maximum readiness.

In a statement published on the official X account, the command said: “Attention. In connection with another major attack by the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine with air attack vehicles recently, the operation of Polish and allied aviation has begun in our airspace.

“In accordance with the relevant procedures, the RSZ Operational Commander mobilized the necessary forces and means at his disposal.

“Mission fighter planes and early warning planes are operating, while ground air defense systems and radar reconnaissance have reached maximum readiness.”

The statement continues: “These actions are preventive in nature and are aimed at protecting airspace and airspace, especially in areas adjacent to threatened areas.

“RSZ Operations Command is monitoring the current situation and sub-forces and vehicles are ready for emergency response.”

Citizens were told to take shelter

Timur Tkachenko, head of the Military Administration of Ukraine, confirmed that the attack was planned and urged locals to stay in shelters.

In his article on Telegram, he said: “The enemy is attacking the city with attack UAVs and ballistic missiles. Air defense systems are operational. Stay in shelters until everything is clear!”
