Orange Line may be delayed by a year as double-decker flyovers planned

Since Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) decides to integrate double -storey overpasses along the corridor parts of the corridor, the 3rd stage of Namma Metro’s Namma Metro can be postponed for at least one year. Authorities confirmed that this change in design would increase the general project cost of around 5%.
On August 10, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the long -standing yellow line connecting the RV path to Bommasandra, and in the same incident, he put the cornerstones for the 3rd stage of Metro Network, a infrastructure project of more than 15.611 Crore.
The phase 3 will cover a distance of more than 44 km with 31 high stations. Bengaluru has been thought to serve growing housing, industrial, educational and commercial centers. The project includes two corridors: First, JP Nagar 4. from stage to Kempapura 32.15 km and the second is 12.5 km from Hosahalli to Kadabagere.
In August 2024, although he received all legal approvals from the Union Cabinet, including the openness, the progress of the project slowed down. Authorities connect the delay to the design changes required for double -storey viaduct. “The changes demand about 25% more land for station structures, because the increasing height of the alignment requires additional -road measures,” he said.
New deadline
Initially, BMRCL targeted the mid -2029 or 2030 for the completion of the project. With the reviewed plan, the deadline was extended until May 2031. According to the authorities, the project will require about five and a half years for the completion of construction.
The BMRCL expects to call a tender until November 2025. After finalizing the bid process, the floor work will start until December 2025 or January 2026. It is recommended that construction be taken in at least eight tender packages.
A senior BMRCL official said, “To address the future road blockage, we add double -storey cliffs during certain extensions. This means that the construction will last for another year, although it will add significant value by optimizing traffic and space.” He said.
This plan is not new for Bengaluru. The yellow line is already a rail-Cum-Road double-storey bridge near Ragududa and connected to the central silk board junction. It serves as a reference point for Phase 3 planning, assigned as the first structure of Southern India. Authorities believe that this model will provide more softer traffic flow during intensive extensions, even if the metro operations expand.
Connection Increase
The phase 3 is designed to strengthen the connection by offering multiple exchange points with existing and future namma metro lines. These include Peenya and JP Nagar stations on the green line, Mysuru Road Station on the Purple Line and the Sumanahalli Station in the Hosahalli -Kadabegere corridor.
JP Nagar Phase 4 is connected to the pink line on Bannerghatta Road, while Hebal is expected to serve as a critical intersection. Here, the vehicles will be able to move on to the Kempegow International Airport and the blue line to the red line that will work between hebbal and Sarjapur.
The estimated cost of phase 3 is 15.611 Crore. Approximately 7,577 Crore will be financed by credit, while another ₹ 450 Crore is expected to be collected through revenue resources such as station naming and advertising.
Once Operational, Orange Line will expand the tensions that receive inadequate services along the west side of the Otor Ring Road and the Magadi Road. The corridor is expected to handle 7.85 Lakh passengers per day. Add this, the total length of Bengaluru’s subway network will rise to 222.2 km and will strengthen its position as one of the largest urban subway systems in India.
According to BMRCL officials, pre -ground works such as geotechnical surveys have already been completed. Land acquisition continues along the locks of the corridor. Authorities, “Despite the date of the review date, the integration of double -storey overpasses will increase long -term efficiency and road passengers will provide a very needed relaxation,” he said.
