Power Utilities Prepare To Meet Rising Demand In Telangana

Hyderabad: With power demand rising steadily, Telangana’s Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL, Southern Discom) and Transmission Corporation (Transco) have initiated a comprehensive upgrade drive to ensure uninterrupted power supply throughout the coming summer. At a review meeting held at the corporate office, south discom CMD Musharraf Faruqui emphasized the need for preliminary preparations and stated that peak demand is expected to rise from 19,500 MW to 20,000 MW next year, with Greater Hyderabad alone expected to reach 5,000 MW.

To accommodate this increase, utilities will install 3,866 new distribution transformers (DTRs) and upgrade 431 power transformers (PTRs) throughout the southern network. For the first time in Telangana, 1,000 kVA transformers will replace the existing 500 kVA units operating at over 70 percent capacity, primarily in Greater Hyderabad.

Additionally, high capacity 16 MVA power transformers will be installed at key substations in Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Manikonda, Gachibowli and other high load areas to efficiently meet the growing urban demand and address space constraints.

Faruqui directed officials to work closely with field engineers, conduct detailed assessments in high-demand areas and finalize implementation plans within a week. He instructed that repair and maintenance work would begin at the end of October and that all summer action plan work would be completed by December.

Transco directors Sampath Kumar and Latha Vinod, south disco directors Dr Narasimhulu and Shivaji and several chief engineers and supervising engineers attended the meeting.
