Orthodox Church slams Kerala govt. decision to extend operating hours of bars

The Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church on Wednesday reacted heavily to the Kerala government’s decision to extend the working hours of bars in the state, claiming that the move will destroy an entire generation.
Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church association secretary Biju Oommen said people were concerned about this move that ‘guarantees 24-hour liquor supply’.
“The government should make it clear whether it wants young people to stay in a bar,” Mr Oommen told reporters. He accused the government of selling out a generation to protect the interests of bar owners in the state. “Is this the only way to fill the coffers? Are the interests of bar owners more valuable than the tears of mothers in the state?” he asked.
government order
The harsh attack by the leading Church denomination came a day after the government issued an order extending the opening hours of bars, beer and wine halls by two hours. Bars and beer halls will be able to serve from 10 a.m. to midnight, according to the instructions.
In addition, the government has decided to allow FL3 licensed bar hotels with 5-star and above classification to operate till 3 am with an additional three hours after the permissible closing time for an annual rent of ₹ 5 lakh.
