Padilla, Schiff request breakdown of military deployments in L.A.

US Sens.
Two California wrote on Monday, wrote that thousands of National Guard Union and US marine pies were used, whether they are in any law enforcement activity and how they have been deployed and how much the deployments have cost to taxpayers.
Distributions Gov. Gavin Newsom was held on the objections of La Mayor Karen Bass and other local authorities and filed a lawsuit claiming that they were illegal by the state. The letter arrived a few hours before a federal judge in a decision on Tuesday.
Padilla and Schiff wrote that distribution were unnecessary and more details were needed in the light of similar operations that were released or threatened in other American cities.
“It is inappropriate to use the US military to help or support immigration operations, potentially a violation of the law and the US people and the US army,” they wrote.
The Ministry of Defense refused to comment on the letter to The Times, saying that he would “respond directly to Padilla and Schiff.
In June, President Trump ordered the Federalization of about 4,100 national guards in California in June because LA protests erupted on migration policies. Approximately 700 sailors were also deployed to the city. Most of these forces have been separated since then, but Padilla and Schiff said that 300 guard soldiers were active.
Trump, Hegseth, and other administration leaders have previously defended the laws and order in Los Angeles, defending federal buildings, and preserving federal immigration representatives as migration raids in local communities against such execution efforts.
At the beginning of the deployment in June, hegseth and other defense officials estimated that the task would take 60 days and basic needs such as travel, housing and food would cost approximately $ 134 million. However, the management did not provide updated details as the operation continued.
Padilla and Schiff asked La the number of California guards and seafarers deployed and what units they withdrawn, and whether any non -governmental protection personnel were brought, and whether other military personnel were deployed to La.
The senators asked for the breakdown of the Ministry of Internal Security Teams, including the “special missions ve and the migration and customs enforcement agencies carried out by different units deployed to the city. They also asked which units were appointed to provide security on federal sites, or that they were immediately placed in waiting status outside the protest or immigration application areas ”.
” [Defense] The staff arrested, detained any person, otherwise he used law enforcement officers or used fatal forces during the operation. “
In addition, they wanted the total cost of all studies to the Ministry of Defense and operations, maintenance, personnel or other accounts and asked whether any financing used in the operation was directed from other programs.
Padilla and Schiff asked the Ministry of Defense to provide information until September 12th.
The use of military personnel for civilian law enforcement officers in the US soil is prohibited by the law in accordance with the Posse Comitatus law. The 1878 law applies to protecting federalized troops such as US Marine Posts and La.
In his case, California argued that the deployments were a violation of the Posse Comitatus Law. On the other hand, the Trump administration argued that the President had the legal authority to use federal troops to protect personnel such as federal properties and ice agents.
On Tuesday, a federal judge ruled the state and found that the deployments violated the Posse Comitatus Law. The judge waited for 10 days and the Trump administration is expected to appeal.
Schiff said Trump was not “to make a goal, but to create a demonstration, and that the decision was“ illegal and unfair ”.
Padilla, the decision confirmed that we have known since the beginning: Trump broke the law in their efforts to turn service members into their national police force. ”
