Harsh Goenka mocks IndiGo with hilarious video: ‘New fleet with no delays’ goes viral amid flight chaos

The clip comes at a time when India’s largest domestic carrier is facing serious operational challenges, frustrating passengers and raising questions about management and planning.
IndiGo Faces Flight Cancellations Due to Pilot Duty Rules
IndiGo, which controls about 65% of India’s domestic aviation market, admitted it had made inadequate preparations ahead of the Nov. 1 deadline for the introduction of new night flying and weekly rest requirements for pilots.

The airline’s oversight led to more than 2,000 flight cancellations in December alone, stranding tens of thousands of passengers, affecting holidays, weddings and other travel plans, and causing widespread complaints about lost luggage.
The problems arose when IndiGo increased daily flights by 6% on its winter schedule without adjusting its operational resources to meet the new flight duty time limitations (FDTL) for pilots.
Government Takes Action, Flight Cuts Announced
On Tuesday evening, India’s civil aviation ministry ordered a 10% cut in IndiGo’s domestic program, doubling the 5% cut earlier given by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This is the government’s first punitive action against the airline after last week’s operational disruption.
Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said, “The Ministry feels it is necessary to shorten overall IndiGo routes which will help stabilize operations and reduce cancellations. A 10% cut has been ordered. While complying with this, IndiGo will continue to cover all its destinations.”
IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers called on the ministry to provide an update on the cuts, citing serious inconvenience to passengers due to mismanagement of crew rosters, flight schedules and communications.
DGCA Orders New Notification to IndiGo
Earlier, the DGCA had stated that IndiGo did not demonstrate the ability to run its winter schedule efficiently. The regulator asked the ministry to amend the demonstration notice and issue a new notice, citing inadequate management of aircraft and pilot crews.
Data obtained from DGCA showed that although IndiGo had approval to operate 64,346 domestic flights in November, it actually operated 59,438 flights with 951 cancellations.
Aircraft availability was also lower than expected, with 339 aircraft in October and 344 in November compared to the planned 403.
IndiGo Tries to Rescue
In response, IndiGo stated that operations on its network had been restarted, almost all delayed baggage had been delivered and the airline was operating more than 1,800 flights per day. The company added that on-time performance has returned to normal levels.
Other carriers saw smaller adjustments: Air India reduced its weekly domestic flights by 0.8%, AI Express by 6%, Akasa by 5.7%, while SpiceJet increased its operations by over 26%, from 1,240 weekly flights to 1,568.
What Does This Mean For Passengers?
Passengers are advised to check flight schedules and updates carefully as operational adjustments are ongoing. Experts say proper compliance with FDTL rules and adequate planning are essential to avoid further disruptions in India’s booming domestic aviation market.
