Parliament’s budget session is unlikely to end on April 2 according to the original schedule. Sources said the government is considering convening Parliament again on April 16 to discuss amendments to the Constitution (One Hundred and Sixth Amendment) Act, known as the Women’s Reservation Act, 2023, and is looking to expedite the implementation of this law.

The government has suggested that the delimitation, which is the key step towards implementing the Women Reservation Act, 2023, be based on the 2011 Census rather than waiting for the conclusion of ongoing censuses.

According to sources, the Lok Sabha Secretariat has been asked to look at precedents in case the Parliament session is extended beyond its calendar to accommodate additional legislative business.

Sources said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has also conveyed the possible dates of this discussion to its allies.

According to sources, the Budget session will not be postponed indefinitely on April 2. Instead, both Speakers of the House will prolong the session by declaring a recess to reconvene on April 16.

Apart from Congress and Left parties, Home Minister Amit Shah and his colleagues in the ministry also met other political parties. The Congress was insisting on an all-party meeting for wider pre-legislative consultation before bringing the necessary amendments to Parliament.
