Parliament Passes Bill To Recognise Amaravati as AP’s Permanent Capital

New Delhi: Parliament on Thursday passed a bill seeking to recognize Amaravati as the sole and permanent capital of Andhra Pradesh, and the Rajya Sabha gave its assent to it by voice vote. The Andhra Pradesh Reorganization (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which will defeat any future proposal to amend the decision to make Amaravati the capital of the southern state, was passed by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

Responding to the debate on the bill in Rajya Sabha, Home Minister Nityanand Rai said Andhra Pradesh will get a new capital city in Amaravati and extended his best wishes to the state. Calling it a historic event, the minister said, “We hope that Andhra Pradesh will touch new heights in development and play a meaningful role in realizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream and determination to achieve ‘Viksit Bharat’.” he said.

Supporting the bill, TDP’s Masthan Rao Yadav Beedha said that after a lot of planning, Amaravati was chosen due to its history, location and potential. Several members, including TDP member and Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu, also supported the bill.
