Parliament passes Jan Vishwas Amendment Bill

Parliament on Thursday, April 3, 2026, passed a bill amending 784 provisions in 79 central laws to decriminalize and rationalize petty offenses to further improve the country’s business environment.
The Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Bill, 2026 was passed by voice vote in the Rajya Sabha after Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal responded to a debate on the legislation.
The minister said the legislation will help citizens and SMEs.
The bill was passed by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, April 1.
These laws are administered by 23 ministries, including coal, trade and industry, shipping, urban development and transport. Of the 784 provisions, 717 are for the decriminalization of minor crimes, and 67 are for the convenience of living.
