Peabo Bryson, R&B singer behind classic Disney duets, dies aged 75 | US news

R&B singer Peabo Bryson, known as the voice behind the Oscar-winning Disney movie Regina Belle and the duets A Whole New World with Celine Dion from Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin, has passed away. He was 75 years old.

Bryson, who won two Grammy awards, died on Tuesday, days after suffering a stroke, his family said in a statement.

“While our hearts are broken, we take comfort in knowing how deeply Peabo was loved and how many lives his voice and generous spirit touched,” the family said in a statement. “His legacy and music will live on for generations to come.”

Born and raised in South Carolina, the singer, songwriter and balladeer began his career in the 1970s with the band Moses Dillard and Tex-Town Display. Shortly thereafter, Atlanta record label Bang Records signed him as a solo artist.

Bryson suffered a stroke in late May and was placed under medical care.

“At this time, the family requests privacy as we navigate this deeply personal moment together,” his representative said in a statement at the time. “The thoughts, prayers and love of friends and fans are welcomed and deeply appreciated.”

Bryson has made a full recovery after suffering a heart attack in 2019.
