Pentagon announces another boat attack amid growing scrutiny
Hello and thank you for joining us on the US politics live blog.
The US military launched a new deadly attack on a boat suspected of carrying illegal drugs on Thursday, killing four people in the eastern Pacific, the Pentagon said, as questions continued to grow about the legality of such attacks.
US navy admiral frank bradley and the chief of staff, Dan CaineHe had appeared before the armed services and intelligence committees of the House and Senate on Thursday for a closed-door briefing on a specific Sept. 2 attack that has come under scrutiny over whether the military was ordered to launch a second attack on survivors after an earlier attack.
Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers Congress The Minister of Defense said: Pete HegsethAlthough they did not order the military to kill the surviving members of the Sept. 2 attack, the pair clashed over whether the attack was appropriate — especially after video of the incident was played at Thursday’s closed briefing.
“What I saw in that room was one of the most disturbing things I have seen in my entire time in public service.” Jim Himesthe top Democrat on the House armed services committee said after leaving the meeting. But he said Bradley “confirmed that there was no ‘kill ’em all’ order and there was no order to give any quarters.”
Hegseth, who has been in trouble following a Pentagon inspector general’s report in March that concluded he violated department policies by sharing classified information in the Signal messaging chat, has sought to downplay his own involvement in the Sept. 2 attack. But the US southern command in Florida was open in social media sharing announced that the final night’s strike was coming in Hegseth’s “direction”.
