Person in hospital after crash involving ship and crane in the Port of Tyne

A man was taken to hospital after a ship collided with a crane in the Port of Tyne, police said.

According to Northumbria Police, emergency services were called to the scene in South Shields just after 1pm on Sunday.

“A ship reportedly collided with a crane for reasons yet to be determined,” police said.

“Emergency services attended and a man was found to have suffered injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

“He was taken to hospital for treatment and remained there.

“Investigations are ongoing to fully understand the situation.”

A North East Ambulance spokesman said: “We dispatched three double-crew ambulances, two clinical team leaders, a duty officer and three vehicles from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and were supported by the Great Northern Air Ambulance Service.

“A patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.

“One of our HART vehicles remains on scene to provide support to the fire department.”
