Phil Foden: Manchester City midfielder’s place in England’s World Cup squad ‘not guaranteed’

England coach Thomas Tuchel says Phil Foden does not have a guaranteed place in the World Cup squad.

The 25-year-old Manchester City midfielder was the only player to start both matches in England’s final camp before Tuchel named his 24-man squad.

However, he failed to fill the void left by the absence of striker Harry Kane, who played a false nine role in Tuesday’s defeat against Japan.

Asked after the match if there was any doubt about the player’s place in the World Cup squad, the German replied: “Yes, it does not guarantee his future.” he said.

Tuchel said Foden had been “excellent” in training but had “difficulty showing it on the pitch”.

“Obviously he hasn’t had a lot of time for City recently, then he came into camp with a very bright smile and has been very good in training,” the England manager added.

“I thought he would surprise us and play with the same enthusiasm and excitement but yes, he is struggling to make the full impact.”

Tuchel must submit his final squad to Fifa by May 30 before starting the World Cup campaign against Croatia in Arlington, Texas, on June 17.

Foden was deployed as a false nine against Japan but made little impact before Tuchel brought on striker Dominic Solanke in the 59th minute.

The player, who started only four of Manchester City’s last 15 matches, has not scored since December 14, when he scored six goals in five matches.
