Phil Mickelson slams alleged California fraud, opposes new tax policies in state

Golf legend Phil Mickelson shared his thoughts on fraud allegations in his home state of California in a series of social media posts.
President Donald Trump said at a New Year’s Eve event on Wednesday that fraud in California, New York and Illinois is worse than the recently uncovered welfare fraud in Minnesota.
Mickelson responded to comments made by Rep. Kevin Kiley, R-Calif., about

“No amount of taxes can help CA until the fraud problem is fixed. CA fraud makes MN look like an amateur,” Mickelson wrote.
“Instead of stopping the fraud and theft and getting the money back, the plan is to give more taxes to citizens who are already the highest-taxed in the country.”
In response to a local opinion column about the proposed billionaire’s tax, Mickelson later wrote: “How about no new taxes until the government gets rid of fraud? Until that happens, more taxes will only fund more fraud.”
In another post, Mickelson suggested stopping the fraud would cost Democrats votes.

“The dilemma for all Democrats is that if you stop the fraud, illegal immigration, and voter fraud in CA, then the Republicans would win CA and have a huge majority across the country. The Democratic party would be nearly finished,” he wrote.
Trump drew further attention to allegations of fraud in California in a Truth Social post on Wednesday, once again claiming that the situation is worse than in Minnesota, citing California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who is at the center of his state’s latest fraud scandal.
“California has more FRAUD than Minnesota, if that’s even possible. When you add in Election Fraud, it’s a tie for first place. Two Crooked Governors, two Crooked States!” Trump wrote.
Newsom’s office responded with a statement about X.
“Donald Trump is an unstable, habitual liar whose relationship with reality ended years ago. It’s not complicated. He spends his days sharing whatever garbage his shriveled little brain can cough up — and [Fox News] “He dutifully treats it as God’s holy book,” the statement said.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services said it would freeze all child care payments to Minnesota amid increased scrutiny over accusations of fraud related to daycares across Minnesota.
