Phil Mickelson’s attorney says video evidence will clear golfer of misconduct

Phil Mickelson is ready to fight the latest allegations leveled against him, which saw him fired from his own golf club.

The six-time champion was accused of making inappropriate contact with a female employee before playing golf at The Farms Golf Club in the San Diego area this spring.

Mickelson allegedly approached a female employee in the clubhouse and had non-consensual and inappropriate physical contact with her. The employee reported the incident to the club’s managers after Mickelson returned to the golf course and rejected the alleged advances.

But Mickelson’s lawyer said the video evidence would clear Mickelson of any wrongdoing.

Mickelson’s attorney, Tom Clare, said, “There is a lot of misinformation floating around, and although Phil has devoted his full attention to a private family health matter, he has retained defamation counsel and is committed to holding him accountable for any broadcast or individual trading through speculation or unsubstantiated rumors.” he said. Club officials acted quickly and found Mickelson mid-round, confronted him with the charge on the golf course and told him to leave the facility. Mickelson reportedly left the facility before completing his tour.

A statement from the Club shared with Golf Digest read in part: “Following a staff member’s report regarding member misconduct, the Club provided immediate and ongoing support to staff, conducted a thorough independent investigation into the incident and took decisive action. This individual is no longer a member of The Farms Golf Club.”

“Farms thoroughly investigates all reported matters in accordance with California Law and takes appropriate action when warranted, consistent with our commitment to integrity, excellence, and accountability. To protect the safety and privacy of our staff and members, we cannot speak further about this matter. Thank you for your understanding.”

Mickelson, a member of LIV Golf, has played in only one of nine completed events at the circuit this season due to an undisclosed “personal health issue” in his family. This lone appearance at LIV occurred in late March in South Africa where he finished T-48.

The 55-year-old player made a statement on April 2, a week before the Masters, announcing that he would not be playing at Augusta National and would “be away from the team for an extended period of time as my family continues to deal with a personal health issue.” He will not participate in next week’s US Open at Shinnecock Hills.
