Per PeopleThe report confirms that Greenberg, a 27-year-old Philadelphia teacher, died by suicide despite receiving 20 stab wounds to his back, neck and head, with a knife protruding from his chest.
Greenberg, a first-grade teacher at Juniata Park Academy, was found dead in her locked apartment on January 26, 2011, after returning home from work early due to a snowstorm.
Her fiancé, Samuel Goldberg, said he found her body after forcing the door open when she did not answer. Goldberg was never a suspect and was never charged with any crime.

The circumstances, including multiple stab wounds and no signs of forced entry, fueled years of debate and legal challenges for his family over whether his death was self-inflicted.
The new decision sparked reactions and the Greenberg family’s lawyer, Joseph Podraza Jr. He said in a statement that the review was a “deeply flawed attempt to justify a predetermined outcome”.
“This includes false claims, such as the claim that Ellen had stab wounds to her spine during the autopsy, a theory that has been rejected by every credible expert, including the city’s own neuropathologist,” Podraza said in a statement to Fox New Digital. he said.

“Ignoring key evidence contradicting suicide, extensive 3D photogrammetry is a reconstruction that proves Ellen could not have opened all the wounds, unexplained bruises, missing footage, a solid lock, explanations of a toxic relationship, all on her own,” he said.
Greenberg’s death was confirmed in 2011 by Deputy Medical Examiner Dr. It was initially ruled a homicide before Marlon Osbourne changed the manner of death to suicide after consulting with Philadelphia Police investigators.
Chief Medical Examiner Lindsay Simon led the latest review as part of a settlement with Greenberg’s parents, who challenged the finding of suicide for years.
In February 2025, Greenberg’s family filed a lawsuit with the City of Philadelphia and others, asking them to reconsider the manner of Ellen’s death. The family said the incident should be turned into murder or undetermined.

Per People, the new report said that “while the distribution of injuries was undoubtedly unusual, the fact remains that Ellen could have caused these injuries herself,” noting that she was “a young woman suffering from anxiety.”
The Chief Coroner wrote that “the fiancée’s DNA was not detected on the knife used in the injuries” and that there was no evidence of an abusive relationship or fight at the scene.
“Considering all this information, it is the opinion of the undersigned that Ellen Greenberg’s manner of death is best classified as ‘suicide’,” the report said.
Podraza said in a statement that Simon’s report was “an embarrassment to the city and an insult to Ellen and her family.”
