Philippines earthquake LIVE: Tsunami alert in Australia and New Zealand after 7.8 quake | World | News

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), Australia’s equivalent of the Met Office, has canceled its tsunami watch warning for Australia’s coasts and territories. According to the BoM’s report, the cancellation was made by the Australian Joint Tsunami Warning Center (JATWC) at 10.38am on Monday 8 June 2026 (in other words, five minutes earlier at the time of writing).
A statement released by the BoM reads: “A magnitude 7.8 submarine earthquake occurred near Mindanao, Philippines, at 9:37 am (EST) on Monday, June 8, 2026. “No tsunami waves were observed posing a threat to the Australian mainland, islands or territories.”
BoM added: “TSUNAMI WATCH FOR AUSTRALIA HAS BEEN CANCELED. No further updates will be issued unless the situation changes.”
