Pixar Toy Story 5 box office biggest opening in franchise history

Disney’s There’s still some excitement in the Toy Story franchise.

The fifth installment in the Pixar film series reached $160 million in its opening weekend; this is the highest number in franchise history. “Toy Story 5” grossed $152 million internationally, bringing its estimated global gross for the three-day period to $312 million.

According to Rentrak data, “Toy Story 4” held the previous record for the series, earning $120.9 million in revenue during its opening in 2019. The film series has grossed more than $3 billion in total box office revenue since the first film was released in 1995; its two installments exceeded $1 billion worldwide.

“Toy Story 5” had the second-highest opening for an animated film, just behind “Incredibles 2,” which grossed $182.7 million domestically in 2018.

Approximately 11.5 million moviegoers tuned in to see “Toy Story 5” over Father’s Day weekend, according to EntTelligence data. More than a quarter of viewers preferred more expensive, premium, large-format screenings. IMAX It reported $11.5 million in domestic ticket sales and $18.4 million in worldwide ticket sales.

“Toy Story 5” continues the trend of strong theatrical releases for family-friendly titles, as nearly 70% of ticket buyers are from family groups.

“Another incredible summer weekend is in the books, fueled by the big debut of ‘Toy Story 5,’ which appealed to every viewer demographic imaginable, making it the top four-quarter movie,” said Paul Dergarabedian, head of market trends at Rentrak.

According to Rentrak data, PG-rated family-friendly movies have outperformed PG-13 and R-rated movies at the box office for the past two years.

Additionally, animated features are generally not front-loaded at the box office, meaning they consistently generate ticket sales and spread through word-of-mouth throughout their run in theaters.

“Disney and Pixar have orchestrated a film that has wowed audiences and critics, is perfectly timed, impeccably marketed and now primed for solid weeks of play in theaters and reaching $1 billion and beyond at the worldwide box office,” Dergarabedian said.
