PK Subban makes good on commitment, donates $10M to Montreal Children’s Hospital

More than a decade ago, PK Subban was one of the best defensemen in the NHL. He had already won a Norris Award and was one of the faces of the Montreal Canadiens when he made a big pledge: he would donate $10 million to the Montreal Children’s Hospital.

That was in 2015, and a little more than a year later the Canadiens sent him to Nashville in a blockbuster trade for Hall of Fame blueliner Shea Weber.

But that didn’t mean he wouldn’t keep his promise.

On Friday, it was announced that Subban had accomplished his mission to donate $10 million to the hospital. Montreal GazetteIt is the largest charitable commitment made by an athlete in Canada.

ROBERT KRAFT, OWNER OF PATRIOTS, ANNOUNCED THAT HE HAVE GIVEN NEARLY 1 BILLION DOLLARS TO CHARITIES DURING DECADES OF CHARITY WORK.

“It was tough. It definitely had its challenges,” Subban said. “Was there any doubt in my mind? No, because I made a promise that I would always keep.”

Subban, who now works as an analyst for ESPN, said ahead of the Montreal Children’s Hospital Foundation gala on Friday that reaching that high figure is a significant challenge, made even more difficult by those who doubt his commitment and follow-through.

“At 23 years old, I think it raises questions for people to see him take on that level of responsibility,” Subban said. “I hope those who doubt will believe in themselves. Don’t doubt other people, just find the courage to believe in yourself and believe that the impossible is possible, and we have proven it.”

Hats off to PK on this one. The foundation says the funds it donates have helped 100,000 children, which is amazing.

It would be easy to go the “Scott’s Tots” route (“The Office” fans I know what I mean) when he was traded out of town, but no. He was true to his word.

Great stuff from PK.
