PM Modi Arrives in Slovakia, First Indian PM Visit Since 1993
Bratislava: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Slovakia for the second leg of his two-country visit; where he will meet with President Peter Pellegrini and Prime Minister Robert Fico and interact with business leaders. Modi became the first Indian prime minister to visit Slovakia since its independence in 1993.
“This visit provides an opportunity to deepen India-Slovakia relations and explore new avenues of cooperation. I look forward to fruitful meetings with President Pellegrini and Prime Minister Fico,” Modi said in a post on X after reaching the Slovak capital on Sunday night.
The Prime Minister came to Bratislava for a two-day visit (14-16 June) after holding bilateral meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron in Nice. He also attended the launch of the ‘Bharat Innovations’ event in France.
“On arrival at the hotel, the Prime Minister was received by Mr. Juraj Blanar, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic, and given a warm welcome of bread and salt, a symbol of hospitality, respect and goodwill to Slovakia,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a post on X. he said.
In his departure statement before the visit, Modi said, “This historic visit builds on the strong momentum in our bilateral relationship. I look forward to holding talks with President Pellegrini and Prime Minister Fico. I will also have the opportunity to interact with Slovak business leaders.”
The Prime Minister said the visit will further energize India’s strategic partnership with the European Union, of which Slovakia is an important and valuable member.
In the statement made by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), it was stated that the visit follows President Droupadi Murmu’s State Visit to Slovakia in April 2025 and Slovak President Pellegrini’s visit to India for the Artificial Intelligence Impact Summit in February 2026.
“The visit will reaffirm India’s commitment to strengthen its bilateral relationship with Slovakia in various sectors, including trade, investment, automobile and railway production,” it said in a statement issued on June 9. The statement was included.
In a post published on X on Saturday, Pellegrini said, “Dear Prime Minister Narendra Modi, I look forward to welcoming you to Bratislava on Monday. Your historic visit will enhance our good dialogue in New Delhi and open new opportunities for Slovakia-India cooperation.”
Modi will return to France to attend the G7 Summit to be held in Evian on June 16-17.
At the summit, Modi is expected to exchange views with G7 leaders and invited partner countries on issues such as international cooperation, economic growth and artificial intelligence. It is also planned to hold a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the meeting.
The last leg of his visit will take him to Paris on June 18, where he will attend VivaTech 2026, Europe’s largest technology and startup event, with President Macron.
