PM Modi meets Indian origin tech entrepreneurs, community members in Johannesburg

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, November 21, 2025, interacted with Indian-origin technology entrepreneurs and members of the South Africa-based Indian community and appealed to them to deepen their engagement with India.
Modi, who was in Johannesburg to attend the G20 Leaders Summit, stated in his social media post that he had a “productive interaction” with Indian technology entrepreneurs and talked about their work in FinTech, social media platforms, agriculture, education, health, medical devices and many other sectors.
“We called on them to deepen their relationship with India and work closely with our people,” he said.
The Prime Minister also met members of the Indian community in South Africa who are actively working with different social organisations.
“They shared their experiences on various issues and highly appreciated the progress made by India in different fields. They urged them to continue the momentum of strengthening people-to-people ties,” he said.
“He also asked them to increase the popularity of Indian culture among the people of South Africa, including practices like Yoga, Ayurveda,” he added.
Speaking to
Mr Modi also praised efforts to help young people connect with the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, he added.
The Prime Minister also received a ‘Kalash’ of Shree Anna or millets from India and South Africa from Chinmaya Mission.
“This will be installed at the Annapoorna Devi Temple in Durban,” he said.
Mr Modi also met the winners of the Bharat Ko Janiye (Know India) Quiz in South Africa.
The Prime Minister said that this quiz “encourages members of our diaspora to learn more about India’s history, culture and more.”
PM Modi meets chairman and CEO of Naspers
Mr Modi held a meeting with the chairman and CEO of Naspers on the sidelines of the G20 Leaders Summit and discussed expanding investments in India’s digital ecosystem.
Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said in a social media post that Mr. Modi met with the South African multinational internet and technology company’s Chairman Koos Bekker and CEO Fabricio Bloisi and that the talks focused on “India’s digital ecosystem, expanding investments in artificial intelligence, startup and space sectors, and exploring new avenues in the consumer market and technology.”

“Naspers’ success in India reflects the ease of doing business in India and the strength of the Startup ecosystem,” he added.
“Deepening investment linkages came to the fore in the discussions. It is commendable that Naspers is actively working with our talented youth in various sectors,” Mr Modi told X.
Separately, Mr Modi also met his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese and the two leaders reviewed the progress made in cooperation in various areas, including defense and security, critical minerals, trade and investment and people-to-people relations.
Mr Modi met Mr Albanese a few hours after arriving in South Africa to attend the G20 Leaders Summit.
Mr Modi arrived at Waterkloof Air Force Base (AFB) in Gauteng, where he received a warm and ceremonial welcome.
This is the first G20 Summit held in Africa. The African Union became a member of the G20 during India’s presidency in 2023.
