PM Modi Speaks With Putin Ahead Of Trump’s Meeting With Zelenskyy | India News

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a call from Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, while Putin shared an assessment of his last meeting with US President Donald Trump in Alaska last week.

While thanking Putin, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the consistent position of India to peacefully solve the Russian-Ukraine conflict through diplomacy. According to the moment, both leaders touched on various issues of bilateral cooperation to further strengthen the private and privileged strategic partnership between India and Russia.

This is also scheduled for Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to hold a meeting at Washington DC on Monday.

Trump-Zelenskyy Meeting

Zelenskyy announced that he would meet with US President Donald Trump on Monday for diplomatic efforts to end the Russian-Ukraine conflict just two days after the “historical” bilateral meeting between Trump and Putin in Alaska.

The President of the Ukraine also welcomed Trump’s proposal for a unilateral meeting of Ukraine, USA and Russia, and emphasized Kiev’s commitment to peace and close coordination with international partners.

India-Russia oil trade

According to the moment, Trump said in an interview with Fox News that Russia had lost India as an oil customer and discussed the economic aspect that came to the table for talks in Alaska.

When asked about the economic side of Putin’s negotiations, Trump referred to the role of India and said, “Well, it is India that makes about 40% of oil, as you know that China has done a lot … And if I had done secondary sanctions, it would be destructive from their point of view. Maybe I wouldn’t;”

Trump’s words follow the new Delhi’s decision to bring 50 percent of tariffs to Indian imports, referring to the oil trade with Russia.

On August 7, the US President announced 25 percent more tariffs against India, and then implied that more “secondary sanctions” could be applied in connection with the same dispute.

Following the tariff announcement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MEA) described the US movement as “unfair, unjust and unreasonable” in its response and declared that the new Delhi would take “all the actions necessary to protect national interests”.
