PM Modi tours iconic Dutch dam; eyes cooperation in water management

Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with his Dutch counterpart Rob Jetten toured the iconic Afsluitdijk Dam on Sunday, May 17, 2026, while India and the Netherlands explored deeper cooperation on water management and climate-resilient infrastructure.

“One area where the Netherlands is doing groundbreaking work is in water management. The entire international community can learn a lot from this,” Mr Modi said in a social media post after the visit.

The Prime Minister also said: “We are committed to bringing modern technology to India aimed at helping in irrigation, flood protection and expansion of the inland waterway network.”

Describing the Afsluitdijk Dam as a “symbol of excellence and innovation”, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) emphasized its role in water management, flood protection and freshwater storage.

“The visit highlighted the importance of Dutch expertise for the Kalpasar Project, which aims to create a freshwater reservoir and dam near the Gulf of Khambhat in Gujarat, India,” MEA said in a social media post. he said.

“The visit highlighted opportunities for deeper Indo-Dutch cooperation on climate change resilience, water technology and sustainable infrastructure,” he added.

Mr Modi touched down in The Hague on Friday, May 15, 2026, for a two-day visit as part of his four-nation European tour (which also includes Sweden, Norway and Italy) aimed at strengthening bilateral ties in a number of key areas.
