A man has been arrested after a police car went off the road in Belfast yesterday, injuring three officers. Police said they noticed a car driving suspiciously initially stopped. However, the driver escaped without hitting those pursuing him.

Detective Chief Inspector Claire Hamilton said: “At around 4.45pm, officers on patrol in the Ballysillan Road area spotted a silver Ford Focus acting suspiciously. The vehicle initially stopped for police, but when officers attempted to speak to the passenger the vehicle drove off in the direction of Hesketh Road. The vehicle was later seen colliding with a police vehicle in the York Street area of ​​north Belfast, left the road, went over a hedge and the vehicle went onto the road once again. The vehicle was found abandoned in the Midland Avenue area a short time later.

Following police investigations, a man in his 40s was later arrested on suspicion of offenses including drink or drug driving, dangerous driving, vehicle theft, driving an uninsured motor vehicle, assaulting police and disorderly conduct.

“He remains in custody and is assisting with investigations.

“As a result of the collision, the three police officers involved were injured and were unable to continue on duty. Fortunately, we do not believe their injuries are serious at this time and I have their full support until they recover.

“The vehicle was also damaged and was taken off the road.

“This driver’s actions were completely unacceptable and members of the public could have been seriously injured as a result of this completely careless incident.

“Our investigation is ongoing and we would appeal to anyone with any information that could help us, including dashcam or other footage, to contact us on 101 and quote reference number 969 of 23/11/25.”
