Police to review missed opportunities to arrest Huntingdon train suspect during earlier incidents

Cambridgeshire Police will launch an internal review into the events leading up to the stabbing attack on the Huntingdon train.

Anthony Williams, 32, was charged with 10 counts of attempted murder on Monday morning following the attack on an LNER train bound for London King’s Cross on Saturday evening.

But police are now investigating whether he is linked to a series of knife incidents in the hours before the bloody attack.

The force voluntarily referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) but the police watchdog said the referral did not meet the criteria for an investigation.

Cambridgeshire Chief Constable Simon Megicks said he had launched an internal review into events that occurred before Saturday’s train attack.

This force voluntarily referred itself to the Independent Office. Police Conduct (IOPC) however added: “The referral did not meet the criteria for a valid referral so they are not investigating the matter.

“However, yesterday I commissioned an internal review of the events that occurred prior to the tragic events of Saturday evening.

“I received a formal request today. police and Crime Commissioner Darryl Preston for this review.

“I welcome this additional review and will submit a report to him in due course.”
