Police have appealed to the public not to download or click on APK files commonly used in mobile-based scams and not to respond to cybercriminals.

With scammers increasingly baiting people with fake apps, phone calls and other digital crimes, police have advised the public to be careful and avoid opening suspicious apps. In a notice issued by the AP Police Department on Sunday, authorities warned that APK-based scams were spreading rapidly and urged people not to fall into the trap.

Cybercriminals often send a file, usually disguised as a PDF, via SMS, WhatsApp or Telegram and ask users to install it on their phones. Investigators said that once installed, the malicious app could gain access to the device, including banking details and OTPs.

Common bait messages include fake traffic alerts, KYC update requests, utility bill alerts, government loan approvals, wedding invitations, and fake customer service calls. Victims are often threatened with power cuts, bank services, or driver’s license revocation if payment is not made immediately. They are then asked to click a link or upload the file.

Police warned the public not to install apps received via WhatsApp, Instagram or SMS and advised them never to share UPI PIN, ATM PIN, CVV or OTP with anyone even if the caller claims to be a bank official.

In case of installation of a suspicious app, users should immediately turn off mobile data and Wi-Fi, inform their bank to block transactions, and change their internet banking passwords and UPI PIN. Complaints can be lodged at cybercrime.gov.in or by calling the National Cyber Crime Helpline 1930.
