POLL: Should UK taxpayers fund Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s security? | Royal | News

Prince Harry and his family were stripped of security privileges in the UK after he stepped down as a working royal in 2020, but the UK Home Office has now reportedly launched a new review into the Duke of Sussex’s security arrangements. The development follows Prince Harry’s formal request to Home Affairs Minister Shabana Mahmood shortly after his appointment.

A source close to the Duke confirmed that in October he had asked for a risk assessment from the executive committee on the protection of copyrights and public figures (Ravec) operating under the authority of the Home Office. This latest review comes after the duke lost his appeal in May, challenging the High Court’s dismissal of his Home Office claim.

This case concerned Ravec’s decision regarding the level of taxpayer-funded protection during his time in the country.

The legal challenge was launched after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved from England to Montecito, California, where they live with their two children.

The Duke has previously said the Court of Appeal’s decision made it “impossible” for him to bring his wife Meghan and their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet back to the UK safely.

The Duke of Sussex blamed “institution erection” after losing a High Court battle to reinstate his taxpayer-funded privileges in May this year.

A Government spokesman said: “The UK Government’s protective security system is stringent and proportionate.

“It is our long-standing policy not to provide detailed information about these arrangements as doing so could compromise their integrity and impact the safety of individuals.”
