VIT founder and chancellor G. Viswanathan inaugurated Pongal festivities in the traditional manner at the campus in Vellore on Tuesday.

Addressing the students at the event, Mr. Viswanathan said that Pongal is a perfect festival for Tamils living in 160 countries. The festival unites all Tamils regardless of their geographical boundaries. “Tamils should always follow the principles like duty, dignity and discipline propagated by EV Ramasamy Periyar and CN Annadurai to ensure success in their lives,” he said.

Traditional art forms like Bharatanatyam, Jikkaattam and Silambattam performed by the troupes stole the hearts of the students and guests. Pongal was made with rice, jaggery, pulses, cardamom and cashew nuts in the traditional clay pot symbolizing the festival.

The festival is celebrated every year at VIT with the participation of students, faculty, management and non-teaching staff. It is organized every year by Paavendhar Bharathidasan Tamil Literary Society and VIT School of Agricultural Innovations and Advanced Learning. Students from different countries also attended the celebrations in their traditional costumes.

On the occasion, books on water management, millets and agriculture were released by Mr. Viswanathan in the presence of VIT vice-chairman Sankar Viswanathan. Books published by VIT were distributed to farmers.
