Poor Response From Households Slows Census House Listing

Adilabad: Household listing under the first phase of National Census 2027 is ongoing across Telangana, but enumerators in various districts are receiving inadequate response from households during data collection.
District and state officials are monitoring the process closely following complaints about errors in data uploading. The second phase of the census, which includes the collection of detailed individual information, is planned to begin in February 2027.
Enumerators are currently collecting basic household information as part of a household listing effort conducted from May 11 to June 9, officials said.
District collectors supervise the enumerators, nodal officers and auditors involved in the Census process and emphasize the need for error-free data collection as future state and Central government planning will be based on the information collected.
The prevailing heat wave conditions also affected field work; Many enumerators survey in the morning to avoid high temperatures.
Telangana Census director Bharati Holikeri is monitoring the process and has directed the enumerators to complete the house listing without any errors.
But enumerators said many families were reluctant to cooperate. An enumerator from Adilabad town, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said some residents were hesitant to open gates or gates after learning that officials had arrived for census work.
The enumerator said many families fear they could lose their social welfare benefits if details of vehicles or homes are linked to Aadhaar and government schemes. He added that some residents even cover their vehicles during visits by enumerators.
At the same time, officials said many families cooperated fully and provided information to be uploaded to the Census portal.
Around 12,000 families in Adilabad district have already uploaded their details through self-enumeration, officials said.
Adilabad collector Rajarshi Shah said enumerators collected information in 1,293 blocks across the district and urged residents who have completed the self-enumeration to keep their SE-IDs ready to help speed up the process.
