Popular coffee chain with 1,400 UK branches suddenly shuts store | UK | News

A Starbucks branch suddenly closed its doors, to the shock of coffee-loving passengers. A notice attached to the London Bridge store simply states “This store is now closed” with no further explanation.

The closure comes amid a global restructuring plan for the coffee giant, which operates more than 1,400 locations across the UK. Although it is yet to be confirmed whether the London Bridge store is part of the planned reductions, the announcement follows similar closures elsewhere in the UK, including a branch in Ilford, East London.

A spokesman for the Ilford store said the closure was part of a regular review of the chain’s portfolio to ensure stores remained available to customers.

“Our store at 225–227 High Road in Ilford is now closed. We thank our customers for their loyalty over the years,” they added. The move comes shortly after another Starbucks on the same road reopened following renovation; This demonstrated the company’s approach to preserving key locations while closing others.

Starbucks has around 5,600 employees in the UK, some of whom could face redundancies as part of the restructuring.

The chain said the closures would target stores that fail to create the physical environment customers want or where the sites are not sustainably profitable.

Despite the closures, Starbucks remains committed to the UK with plans to open 80 new stores this financial year.

The closures in the UK reflect broader changes in North America, where Starbucks plans to reduce its store portfolio by 1% and cut around 900 head office jobs.

The chain plans to spend $1bn (£746m) on restructuring globally, focusing on underperforming locations while investing in new and refurbished sites.

Starbucks CEO Brian Niccol said in a statement: “We reviewed our coffeehouse portfolio and determined that some stores will close where it is not possible to create the physical environment that customers and partners want and there is no path to financial performance.

“We carried out a similar review in Europe, the Middle East and Africa to ensure stores were positioned correctly and generated appropriate levels of footfall.”

London Bridge’s sudden closure highlights ongoing changes at Starbucks; The company is balancing global expansion with operational efficiency, and many customers are wondering which branches might be affected next.
