Bill Maher calls out Bernie Sanders, says he’s tired of hearing the rich don’t pay their fair share of taxes

Comedian Bill Maher In Friday’s episode of “Real Time,” Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. and other democratic socialists, pointing to the high amount of taxes he had to pay while saying he was tired of hearing about the rich not paying their fair share.
“Last week tax day. …if you include state tax, local tax, sales, property and fees paid to the government [and] Obamacare is probably almost 60% of what I make. That’s too much, and I still wouldn’t care if Bernie Sanders stopped saying rich people don’t pay taxes,” Maher said. “New Rule” section.
“And I’m sure the super-rich, with their armies of accountants and corporate loopholes, can get away with murder, but us regular rich pay a ton of taxes!”
Fox News Digital reached out to Senator Sanders’ office but did not immediately receive a response.

Maher began to appeal primarily to democratic socialists. Los Angeles Times opinion piece It notes that the top 10% of earners pay 72% of all taxes, while the bottom earners pay about 3%.
“Democratic socialists say: socialism “It’s like we don’t have much already,” he continued, pointing to government-funded programs like Social Security, unemployment, Medicare, SNAP and more.

“Not against, just the same question: how can you be? wet the rich and to fail the poor so badly?,” he added, drawing applause from the audience.
The IRS reportedly collected more than $5 trillion in 2025; Maher thought of this figure as he unpacked the government’s failures to adequately care for the poor.

More specifically, Maher pointed to Remote Area Medical (RAM) services, which are designed to provide free medical, dental and vision care to residents of underserved areas.
“Are we really this incompetent and corrupt? Don’t answer that,” he joked.
“Whatever it is, somehow the ultra-rich are getting richer while an increasing percentage feel truly helpless. You never know because Everyone on TV is rich“
Expanding on his argument, Maher touched on activities that were once affordable and have now become high costs that squeeze average Americans, including a vacation at a Disney theme park and skyrocketing concert ticket prices.
He then returned to health care cost and accessibility concerns, noting that the richest can afford health care, while the poorest lack luxuries.

“But the truth is, you can’t provide health care to the rich by threatening to tax and eat them,” he said.
“You raise taxes on billionaires, they either leave the state or they leave the country… Or in some cases, the planet,” he joked, referring to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.

He pointed to Elon Musk’s offer to fund unpaid TSA workers during a cut in DHS funding, noting the capacity of the ultra-rich to single-handedly support entire systems and institutions.
“Skip the middleman. Government and healthcare bureaucracies, who for whatever reason, no matter how much they get, can never reach the public sufficiently, shaming billionaires into doing so directly,” he added.
