Posie, the miracle baby, was born after her mother plummeted 90ft to her death from a Leeds tower block. Now, the woman entrusted with raising her tells in harrowing detail what happened next

When the woman carrying her died after falling 25 meters from a skyscraper to the concrete ground below, the survival of her unborn baby was miraculous and stunned the entire country.

Almost 18 months after the terribly traumatic circumstances surrounding her premature birth, this baby continues to defy the odds that seemed against her by growing into a happy, healthy young girl.

The Daily Mail can today reveal the refreshing survival story of little Posie, whose presence touched everyone who came into contact with her.

Posie’s unique entrance into the world came when her heavily pregnant biological mother, Emma Atkinson, suffered a fatal fall from the ninth floor of a flat in Leeds in October 2024.

Mrs Atkinson died at the bottom of Shakespeare Towers and there was initially little hope that the child she had been carrying for almost nine months could be saved.

But incredibly, the medical team managed to deliver the baby girl alive despite a broken tibia and punctured lung, and the story made national headlines.

Now we can explain what happened next and how Posie continues to defy medical expectations.

After a month in intensive care, the baby was temporarily left in the care of his birth father, Michael Swanson’s family; the extended family left to reach a longer-term agreement that would work for all parties.

Michael's younger sister, Lauren Mitchell, stepped forward and volunteered to raise Posie alongside her six-year-old daughter, Lealea, because Michael's lifestyle was too chaotic to make her a realistic candidate to raise the baby.

By the family’s own admission, Michael’s lifestyle was too chaotic to make him a realistic candidate to raise the baby; but her own younger sister, Lauren Mitchell, was already an exemplary parent to her own child.

Lauren quickly stepped forward and volunteered to raise Posie alongside her own six-year-old daughter, Lealea.

Posie is now officially in Lauren’s care at her clean farm in Leeds and Posie is thriving and suffering no lasting ill effects from the terrible fall on 22 October 2024.

When we visited Lauren, she and her young family had just returned from a trip to Disneyland, and to anyone unaware of Posie’s surprising past, they seemed like any other young family.

Lauren, a former care worker and beautician who is now a full-time mum, said: ‘Posie is such a beautiful little girl.

‘She is a happy, healthy, successful little girl and everywhere we go we get comments about how beautiful she is, which is lovely.

‘Fortunately there was no impact from the fall, which is quite surprising.

‘At first people were surprised he survived, but it turned out he didn’t need to stay in hospital that long.

‘He sleeps well, eats well and is a joy to be around.’

Lauren continued: ‘Emma falling from the skyscraper was so devastating for the whole family, it was the worst tragedy anyone could imagine, especially as she was close to becoming a mother again.

‘While everyone is coming to terms with her death, we’re also wondering, ‘What’s going to happen to Posie?’ we thought.

‘The solution to this problem was always to be found within the family, adoption outside the family was never given importance.’

Lauren added: ‘I never had any doubts about being the person responsible for raising him; I just wanted to be able to bring him love, happiness and a stable future.

‘Lealea is also very caring and loving towards him and it is clear that they will have a close relationship as they grow up.

‘We have worked closely with social services from day one.

Lauren says she’ll tell him all about her mother when the time comes.

She explained: ‘Even now I show pictures of Emma and say to Posie: ‘That’s your mum’ but she’s too young to understand that right now.

‘But the day will come when he’ll have a lot of questions and I’m prepared for that, I’ll tell him all about his mother and how much she is a very loved little girl.

‘I have great support from my family and all my friends, many of whom have children of their own. Emma’s family knows they can come and see Posie whenever they want.

‘Emma and I were friends, we got on very well and I hope Posie will be happy to be safe and cared for in a loving home.’

When Emma died, her eldest daughter, 18-year-old Demi, was also pregnant and had given birth to son Dolton with husband Alfie.

Lauren continued: ‘Demi comes to visit regularly, which is nice because her little boy and Posie are the same age and we’re sure they’ll be close.’

An inquest into Emma’s death will be held in due course, but proceedings are currently ‘suspended’, the West Yorkshire coroner has said. He also said that the police investigation into Emma’s death has not been concluded.

Lauren added: ‘No one will ever know for sure what happened that day but it was awful and something Emma’s family will never forget.’

No foul play is suspected, but different theories have emerged as to what caused the skyscraper to fall in the Burmantofts area of the city.

It was feared that Emma may have committed suicide while visiting her father, David Atkinson, in his ninth-floor flat.

However, family members also expressed the possibility that the woman died by falling out of the window as a result of a tragic accident.

Neighborhood residents pointed out that the latches on the windows, which could be accidentally triggered, allowed them to open enough for a person to fall.

An investigation was opened on October 24, 2024, two days after the incident.

District Coroner Oliver Longstaff said Miss Atkinson was pronounced dead at 12pm. He added that although an exact date has not yet been determined, an investigation into his death will need to be conducted.

Mr Longstaff said: ‘It appears that Emma Atkinson died after falling from her father’s ninth floor flat at Leeds General Infirmary where she was taken.’

Mr Longstaff added: ‘I would like to take this opportunity to extend my sincere condolences to Ms Atkinson’s family and friends for their loss.’

A few days before her death, Emma had learned that she would become a grandmother for the first time.

A family friend of Emma said: ‘She had a difficult life. She had four children, ages 19 to toddler, and was about to become a mother again at age 38.

‘Michael has a past and had spent some time in prison, but he had stayed out of trouble recently and they were excited to have a daughter together. ‘No one can imagine how or why this happened.’
