Preity Zinta Moves Bombay HC Against AI Deepfakes

Actor Preity Zinta has filed a lawsuit in the Bombay High Court seeking removal of artificial intelligence-generated deepfake images and altered content on various social media and online platforms. He also sought an injunction from the court against publishing such unauthorized content featuring him.
A single bench of Justice Madhav Jamdar on Friday, after hearing brief submissions in the case, asked the parties, including online platforms, to develop a mechanism for removal of offensive material from websites.
The court sent the matter to a hearing on July 6.
Zinta referenced videos, images, and chatbot-style interactions depicting her through artificial intelligence-generated deepfakes and stylized images in her costume.
He sought urgent orders from the high court directing such sites to delete such content immediately and also an interim injunction restraining such entities from publishing unauthorized content featuring him.
Deepfake is synthetic media, such as images, audio, or video recordings, created using artificial intelligence to convincingly manipulate or replace a person’s likeness or voice.
