Prepaid power meters not mandatory; defaulters may be shifted: Govt in Lok Sabha

Answering additional questions during Question Hour, Energy Minister Manohar Lal Khattar rejected allegations that the Center was forcing households to switch to prepaid meters in the same manner as some private players.
Addressing concerns about affordability for poor farmers who depend on daily income, he said the system allows for small, flexible recharges lasting five to ten days.

However, Khattar added that people who are in the habit of paying their electricity bills (those who deliberately avoid paying their electricity bills) may need to adopt prepaid meters to reduce payment defaults.
He underlined that electricity distribution companies operate on commercial lines and need to generate income to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply.
