The NBC and Reuters polls come at a time of economic uncertainty across the country as Americans grapple with rising gasoline and food prices, fueled in part by the Iran war. It will end on June 14.

The results also come as Republicans face slim majorities in both the House and Senate and Democrats hope to regain control of both chambers.

The NBC poll, sponsored by More Perfect, a nonprofit, partisan organization that aims to promote and protect democracy, found that 49% of registered voters say they want Democrats to take control of Congress in the midterm elections. The poll found that 44 percent of respondents preferred Republicans to control Congress, while 7 percent of respondents were undecided.

While GOP support has also fallen since March, when 88% of Republicans approved of Trump’s presidency, the party’s voters remain largely loyal to the president. According to the NBC poll, 82 percent of Republicans now approve of his performance as president, and 58 percent say they “strongly” approve. In March, 63% strongly approved.

“These are rocky numbers for Republicans, but they’re not catastrophic,” said Republican pollster Bill McInturff. McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies conducted the poll with Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt.

Democrats “are still in a really good position to win seats despite redistricting,” Horwitt told NBC News.

The NBC poll interviewed 2,400 registered voters from May 29 to June 7. The poll’s margin of error was +/- 2 percentage points.
