Opening summary

Hello and welcome to the Guardian’s live coverage of UK politics on Saturday 18 April.

Keir Starmer faces “doomsday” over the failure of Peter Mandelson’s review process, senior government figures say.

The Prime Minister said he was “surprised” and “furious” that he was not told of the review’s recommendation and that the lack of communication on the issue was inexcusable.

His government also denied that cabinet secretary Antonia Romeo and Cabinet Office permanent secretary Catherine Little were “sitting on” the information despite being aware of the situation last month.

Next week Starmer faces what has been described as “doomsday” as Olly Robbins, who was forced to leave the Foreign Office due to the fallout from failings in Mandleson’s investigation, is expected to appear before a powerful committee of MPs.

Robbins is understood to be furious at being forced out and there are fears his side of events could leave Starmer, who is already facing fresh calls to resign, in an even more precarious situation.
