Bangladesh election result
According to local media reports, the BNP led by Tarique Rahman and its allies, including Gono Odhikar Porishad and Gono Songhoti Andolon, won 211 seats, securing a two-thirds majority in the parliament. The Jamaat-e-Islami alliance won 70 seats, while other parties managed to win six seats.
Unofficial results from most constituencies show that the BNP has easily crossed the threshold to form a government. In many key races, BNP candidates, including party leader and prime ministerial frontrunner Tarique Rahman, cruised to victory with significant vote counts. Overall, the result reflects a clear and decisive victory for the party across the country.
Why are Bangladesh elections important for India?
India is closely watching parliamentary elections in Bangladesh, the first since the bloody coup in July 2024 that ended Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule and forced her into exile.
Delhi sees a strong showing by radical Islamists such as Jamaat-e-Islami or their entry into the BNP-led coalition as a red line that could strain relations, push Dhaka closer to Pakistan and China and weaken New Delhi’s regional influence. Dhaka’s pivot towards Islamabad risks turning Bangladesh into a terrorist haven for Pakistan-backed militants targeting India’s eastern flank; This adds to Delhi’s existing western concerns from Islamabad and Beijing.
