He said: “People wanted to capture us, touch us. They were shouting, they were crying, they were literally crying, throwing flowers, crying, crying, disintegration, people fainted, collapsed. It was a very foreign environment.
“I couldn’t understand why everyone wanted to cry as long as they were, and I couldn’t really want to show our mother as they didn’t really know. I felt a little protective about it. You didn’t even know that – why and how upset you? Now when I looked back, I learned to understand what he gave the world and gave many people.”
Prince William spoke again about his mother’s passing when he was appointed as Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Scotland in 2021. “And on the days of black grief that follows it, I found comfort and consolation outdoors outdoors. As a result, the connection I feel to Scotland will run deeply.”
“And still next to this painful memory, one of the great joy. Because in Scotland – this year twenty years ago – I first met Catherine. No need to say, the town you’ve met your future wife has a very special place in your heart”
William also added how he started to “build his own happy memories” in Scotland that he visited the country on holidays, George, Charlotte and Louis, who have three young children.
