Promise of hot dogs spurs on Pembroke Welsh corgi to victory in the annual derby

The promise of a hot dog at the finish line was enough to spur the Pembroke Welsh corgi to victory in the annual Easter corgi derby at the Scottish racecourse.

The three-year-old Islay, born in New Zealand, cruised to victory in the race at Musselburgh Racecourse.

Carolyne Ricardo, a veterinarian at the University of Glasgow, said: “It’s a bit of a surprise because we only found out two weeks ago that he had been accepted into the race but I’m so happy.”

Ms. Ricardo, originally from New York, added: “She loves naps and starts off slow in the morning, but if she meets a squirrel, the squirrel dies.”

Dogs from around the world competed in the race, including Sadie, who traveled with her owner from Newquay, Cornwall, and Naomi, who lives with her owners in Glasgow but was born in China.

The annual race is in its fifth year and is hosted by Queen Elizabeth II. Created in honor of Elizabeth’s platinum anniversary in 2022.

Aisling Johnston, head of marketing and business development at Musselburgh racecourse, said: “Our Virgin Bet Scottish sprint cup race day is a fixture featuring a wealth of high-quality horse racing with more than £300,000 on offer – but it is no exaggeration to say our little four-legged friends did their best to steal the show.”
